Perimenopause and menopause are not easy chapters for women. I think of this time as a transformation — and like most real transformations, it doesn't come free. There's a price to it, sometimes even suffering. I'm not only talking about physical symptoms here. I mean something bigger: a shift in how we feel, and eventually, in how we meet life itself.
But it can also become something beautiful. A kind of realization.
For most of our lives, we carry the load — for our partners, our children, our employers. Somewhere in all of that carrying, there's often very little room left for our own ambitions, our own wants.
When perimenopause and menopause arrive, they bring something with them too: a certain hard-won wisdom.
That's why I like to call this time a period of INTEGRATION.
We start to reevaluate our lives, our priorities. We learn — slowly, imperfectly — to put ourselves first. We learn where our boundaries are, and finally, we learn how to say them out loud.
All the wisdom we've gathered over a lifetime gets to come home. It integrates into something new. And in that, there's a real liberation — we know who we are, and we no longer have to prove it. Not to anyone else. Not even to ourselves.
Sometimes integration looks small. It's the "no" you finally say to something you'd have agreed to five years ago. It's noticing you're tired and actually resting, instead of pushing through like you always have. It's a quieter house, and realizing you don't mind the quiet — you've earned it.
If you're in the middle of this right now, and it doesn't feel beautiful yet — that's alright. It rarely feels that way at first. Give it time. The wisdom is already there, working its way to the surface.
